Project S.E.L.F.

(Student Education Learning Fund)

To ensure that each child in the Federation is given the opportunity to receive and achieve the highest level of Education without any Social, or Financial Barriers by providing them with the necessities such as textbooks, educational equipment and by paying examination Fees.

BACKGROUND

Project self (students Education Learning Fund) is an initiative in 1995/ by the Government of St. Kitts to provide each student with a textbook.

The Process

The book lists are collected from the schools and one master list is made. The books are usually grouped under subjects. The list is divided into two, one for each of the bookstores, Laws and Walls; these are the main bookstores that we use to order books for S.E.L.F.

The following things are done when the books arrive from the bookstores:

  • The name of each book is recorded
  • The author/authors of each book is recorded
  • The publisher of each book is recorded
  • The ISBN number of each book is recorded
  • The price of each book is recorded
  • The books are then stamped and sent to the various schools

For each school, a list is made each term of the name of each book, the number of each book that was sent and the cost of each book.

Two lists are sent to the school each term. One has the names of the texts that were sent and the numbers sent. The second list is a financial statement. It has the name of each book, the numbers, the cost, and the total cost of each text. The total cost of all the books that were sent to the school is also recorded on the second list.

Each term, the total cost of from the previous term is brought forward.

Recorded in the second book are - the name, numbers, initial cost and total cost of each book that is received at each delivery from the bookstores. The shipment from each bookstore is done separately. At the end of each term, the following table is made up:

Name of each school, Number of books and Total cost of the books received, The numbers are totalled at the end to get the number of books distributed during the term and the total cost of the books distributed during the term.

The first table is broken down into Distribution of books to High Schools, Distribution of books to Government High Schools, Private High Schools, Distribution of books to CFB College – All Divisions included, Distribution of books to Primary Schools, Government Primary Schools and Private Primary Schools.

The next table – Distribution of Books during the period January – April, included are College, AVEC, Government High Schools, Government Primary Schools, Private High Schools, Private Primary Schools and H.M. Prison.

The last table from the main Table – Distribution of Books during the Period January – April – Included – College, AVEC, High Schools Primary Schools and H.M Prison.Next – Total Number of Books distributed during the period and Total Cost of Books Distributed during the period. Next – Suppliers during the period – Number of books from each supplier and total cost of books from each Supplier

For the Second Term, the same procedure is followed. However, there are additional columns in which the totals for the first term are carried forward for example – Distribution of books during the period January – August.

For the Third Term, the same procedure is followed.

At The Schools: Primary

  • The books are checked and written up in the Stock Book – Name of each text, quantity received and (the price – for high schools)
  • The books are stamped with the school stamp
  • They are distributed to the various teachers for their classes
  • Each teacher writes up the books he/she received in the class stock book.

AT THE SCHOOLS: HIGH

The books are checked and recorded in the stock book; the name of each test, quantity received and the price.

They are stamped with the school stamp.

Each child gets a SELF Request form and the names of the books they requested are recorded on this form.

They are distributed to the children who are asked to pay or replace them if they destroy or loose them.

The form is signed by at least one parent who agrees to pay for the book if the child looses the book or destroys it.

The books are collected from the children at the end of each school year. They are redistributed at the beginning of the new school year.
