Education Planner (Ag) Quinton Morton attended a Statistical workshop from December 9 to 11 in Cancun Mexico organised by the PRIE Project.The PRIE project has been an important mechanism to monitor the progress of the countries towards achieving the education goals of the Summits of the Americas.
As a result, it continues to strengthen the national education information systems and it also contributes to a better dissemination and use of information in education.In this framework, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Secretary of Public Education in Mexico (SEP) as the general coordinator of the RegionalEducation Indicators Project (PRIE), the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS ) and the Regional Office for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean of UNESCO (UNESCO OREALC, Santiago), carry out the VII Workshop on Education Statisticsfor Latin America and the Caribbean in Cancun, Mexico, from December 9-11, 2009with the participation of 71 officials from 28 of the 34 countries of the region.The main theme of the workshop focuses on the "Use and Analysis of Statistics and
Education Indicators for Decision Making”. The workshop combines presentations with working group sessions that will address particular issues related to early childhood and secondary education; defined as priority for education in the region by the Heads of State and Government, as well as the progresses and the new developments within the World Survey of Education of UIS, the main source of information used to monitor the various international commitments made by the countries. This meeting is another opportunity to strengthen the work on education statistics in the region, according to the education commitments made by Heads of State and Ministers of Education as well as to share experiences regarding the use and analysis of information on education.
