(EMU) – St. Kitts, November, 13, 2015:“Open the Door Read and Explore,” was the theme for Cayon Primary School’s reading week 2015. From 9th – 13th November, teachers and students at the school participated and competed in various activities. For the teachers, this came in the form of a door competition. Teachers decorated their respective classroom doors to depict a story book cover. The students, had the opportunity, with the aid of their teachers to create a classroom library for their own use during free periods which it is hoped would also help increase their passion for reading. Throughout the week the students also competed in a reading competition as well as a spelling bee completion, which was held in memory of past educator, and Education Officer, Ms.Vaple Burt.
Ms. Angela Matthew language resource and grade six teacher at Cayon Primary stated, “We have just completed our Spelling Bee Competition which was hosted in honour of Ms. Vaple Burt, as members of the Cayon Community know, Ms. Vaple Burt was an educator and she had a passion for spelling and reading.”
She further mentioned, “Shirley Adams and her committee told us that they wanted to partner with us and have the Spelling Bee, so every year we try as much to have this competition in honour of Ms. Vaple Burt.”
She also noted the inclusion of resource personnel within the Education community, who were also recruited and volunteered to read for the students and instil in them the importance of reading. The annual reading week concluded on Friday 13th November, with a march through the streets of Cayon, where students and teachers adorned themselves in costumes depicting the characters which were found in the various books which they would have read throughout the week.
The Ministry of Education, Warner’s One Stop, Shirley Adams and the Green Valley Committee and members of the Cayon community were all sponsors of this praise worthy cause.
