(EMU) – St. Kitts, November, 13, 2015:The UNESCO National Commission in collaboration with the Ripple Institute SKN, hosted a ‘Single Fathers’ seminar this past Wednesday 11th November. The seminar was held under the theme, “Rights and Responsibilities of Fathers.” The Seminar was conceptualized and developed jointly by both partners and is geared towards empowering single fathers and equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed in their role. The focus would be on educational programs as it highlights the rights and responsibilities of a single parent, more specifically fathers. During his opening remarks, Committee member, Mr. Chesil Hamilton stated that the cry for knowledge came from the fathers themselves.
“Today’s exercise is a seminar designed to tap into the expertise and the insights of the professionals from the legal community from the social development community and from the fathering community,” explained Mr. Hamilton.
Representation from the legal and social profession as well as the practical ‘point of view’ were on hand to give brief remarks also to aid in the discussion and answer questions related to the topics from their profession.
Workshops are being conducted in the areas of skills and parenting (I think this is supposed to be the area of parenting skills not skills and parenting) throughout the communities, namely, Cayon, St. Pauls, Basseterre, Old Road and Saddlers. The facilitators are from the very same community in which they are being conducted.
In attendance were stakeholders from the religious community, guidance counsellors from various schools, and representatives from the Probation and Child Protection Services, Ministry of Gender Affairs, and the Ministry of Education.
